Acrylic glass processing

Acrylic or plexiglas is a thermoplastic, i.e. a plastic that can be formed in a certain temperature range. The technical term is polymethylmethacrylate - short PMMA. As acrylic glass is very durable, acrylic glass processing can be used in many sectors, e.g. in the light advertising, in furniture construction or in the manufacture of home accessories. Acrylic glass processing, depending on where acrylic can be used, takes place in different steps. In the acrylic glass processing a certain form must be worked out, this can be done by means of a laser which cuts out the precise contours. This is necessary for example used in the production of acrylic glass cups.

Careful acrylic glass processing for high-quality products

In the acrylic glass processing with carving knives the acrylic is scored and then cleanly broken via an edge. In the further processing of acrylic glass broken edges are then, e.g. for bonding, provided right angle ground. If the form is sawn, the saw blade has not to be too far from the plate to protrude and must always be sharp. In the acrylic glass processing, it is also important to work with a stop as well to immobilise the acrylic glass with a certain strength to prevent the acrylic glassfrom fluttering. To the chipping or the heat and to prevent bending the edges, the say only with a certain speed.

If it is necessary in the acrylic glass processing to drill the holes, plastic drill bit are the most suitable. In order to ensure that no cracks will come up, a test hole is first carried out. Torn edges increase the risk that the plate in the further processing of acrylic glass will break. If the glass will be milled in the acrylic glass processing, all types of milling can be used. However, it is important that this milling machines will be used with fine toothing, since this is very suitable for the processing of acrylic.

According to the steps described in the acrylic glass processing, the edges or surfaces of the machined acrylic glass panels have to be smoothed. Cut edges are e.g. smoothed and deburred with a file or a fine shredding. For grinding all vibration, tape and rotation slider can be used. Grinding can, if necessary, also be made in manual work. In the acrylic glass processing it is generally important to protect the workpiece during clamping against scratches. The acrylic glass processing is completed with the polishing of the machined acrylic glass plate by a very soft polishing and polishing compounds that are compatible to acrylic glass.
